Guria

Guria is located in the western part of Georgia, bordered by the eastern end of the Black Sea. Part of the northern edge of the region is on the Colchis lowland, while to the south-east Guria extends as far as the Meskheti Mountain range. Guria shares a border with Samegrelo to the north, Imereti to the east, Samtskhe-Javakheti in the south-east, Adjara to the south and the Black Sea on the west. In the east part of Guria, the lowlands become mountains and evergreen bushy forests replace swamp forests. Beech forests are found in the mountains and pine and fir trees can be found at higher altitudes. Mountain forests of Guria provide a good habitat for bears, wolves, deer, martens, and bobcats, as well as other animals. Rivers are home to many different types of fish.

The cultivation of vineyards in Guria dates back to antiquity. Gurian villages are characterized by a special charm and color, especially in autumn. Wooden houses often have corn kernels spread out like beads and pumpkins drying in the sun, with yards of green trees, surrounded by wooden fences. The people of Guria are amazingly hospitable.

The most significant cultural sights are the Liakhuri Church (15th century), the Askana Fortress (16th century), the Jumati Monastery (16th century), the Shemokmedi Monastery (16th-17th centuries), and the palace of Prince Gurieli (18th century).

 

Bakhmaro – One of the best mountainous resorts in Georgia is in Guria, the village of Bakhmaro. It is located in the district of Chokhatauri, on the Meskheti Mountain range, in the gorge of the Bakhvistskali River. Bakhmaro is located 2000 meters above sea level, and known for its fresh air: a mixture of the sea and mountain air, resulting in a unique local climate. Bakhmaro is recommended for those who have health problems and can benefit from clean air and healthy food.

Nabeghlavi is the name of a small village in the western Georgian province of Guria. It is also the name of one favorite beverages in the world, Nabeghlavi mineral water. Along with their main competitor, Borjomi, the water that comes in these signature green and yellow bottles is one of the most popular Georgian products both inside and outside of the country. Nabeghlavi water comes bubbling up from 3000 meters below the surface of the earth, picking up layers of minerals on its way, and is naturally infused with carbon dioxide to have a bubbly and effervescent character . Because of the mineral content, it is supposed to have curative properties and is supposedly especially good at calming upset stomachs.

Ureki  – Health resort on the Black Sea shore. It is famous for its magnetic sand beaches to which there is no comparison in the world. The beneficial health properties of magnetic energy have been known since ancient times and were used by Egyptians, Greeks and Indian Yogis for treatment of different diseases.
