Motsameta Monastery (Region of Imereti)
Motsameta Monastery (Holy Martyrs) (Georgian: მოწამეთას მონასტერი) – The history of the monastery’s foundation is connected with the names of the princes of Argveti – David and Konstantine Mkheidze (Georgian: დავით და კონსტანტინე მხეიძე). The brothers were executed for their devotion to the Christian faith. The name of the monastery – Motsameta, literally means “Place of Martyrs”. In the 8th century, the brothers put up great resistance to the Arab invaders. Those who lost in the unequal battle heroically endured terrible tortures. The Georgian Church canonized them as saints. The Motsameta Monastery is a remarkable monument both for its historical and religious purposes. According to historical and archaeological research, it has been established that the Monastery is located on the territory of the historical fortress city of the 6th century – Ukimerioni
The monastery is located in a stunning location on a high rocky outcrop. It is a small, very beautiful monastery with round towers topped with pointed tent-shaped domes. The monastery stands above the turbulent Rioni River and is surrounded by the greenery of the coastal vegetation. The slopes, covered with dense Colchian forest, green in summer and a strikingly diverse palette in autumn, are a sight to behold. In winter, this place is covered with snow, and the Tskaltsitela River (Georgian: წყალწითელა), flowing deep into the gorge, creates a unique picture. Motsameta attracts crowds of tourists with an ancient belief: If a person crawls under the ark three times and venerates the relics, asking Princes David and Constantine for something, they will definitely help.
