Tour Plan

Itinerary: Tbilisi — Ujarma — Shuamta — Ikalto — Telavi — Tsinandali — Shumi — Tbilisi

Departure to the region of Kakheti through the Gombori Pass. The road, like spilled wine, winds between the mountains. Snow-capped mountain ranges, low-lying vegetation along the hilly road, winding rivers. At each next turn, the view is completely new, fundamentally different from the previous ones.

Visit to the Ujarma fortress,  Since the III century, the fortress was the residence of the Georgian kings. The fortress, located on 9 hectares, includes buildings from different periods of the Middle Ages. The Ujarma fortress, where Vakhtang Gorgasali died and where Saint Nino came, evokes an amazing feeling of awareness of the history of ancient Georgia.

Visit to the monasteries Old Shuamta and New Shuamta. There are two monasteries in the village of Shuamta, which at one time were important religious centers of Christian Georgia.  Dzveli or Old Shuamta consists of several temples built in the 5th-7th centuries. The very first of them is a small church in the foreground. The current nunnery – Akhali or New Shuamta was built later, in the 16th century. The monastery complex consists of the Church of the Virgin, the bell tower and outbuildings.

Visit to the medieval Academy and Monastery of Ikalto. The monastery was founded by Zenon of Ikalto and became one of the cultural and scholastic centers of Georgia thanks to its Academy. The Academy, thanks to its faculty of winemaking, is the first scientific university of wine in the world, known to historians.

Visit to Telavi - The first settlement on the territory of today's Telavi appeared in the Late Bronze Age, developed in the Hellenistic era, and in late antiquity an urban settlement was formed. For a long time it was an important trading center on the caravan route from the Middle East to Europe. The landscapes of Telavi and its surroundings are very impressive.

The 900-year-old Plane Tree stands in the center of the city, overlooking the Alazani Valley. They say that the tree was planted by Queen Tamara herself. It is known that honored guests of the city were received in its shade. According to locals, if you make a wish near the tree, it will definitely come true. This place is a great source of inspiration for everyone who visits it.

Visit to the Residence of King Irakli II. One of the main residences of the Kakhetian kings, it is a reduced copy of the palace of the Iranian Shah in Isfahan. The fortress structure is surrounded by a practically intact wall. In addition to the Irakli II Museum, the complex also houses an ethnographic museum and an art gallery.

Visit to the A. Chavchavadze Estate in Tsinandali. The luxurious residence of the Kakhetian princes Chavchavadze, whose guests included Dumas, Pushkin, Lermontov, Griboyedov. A true masterpiece of construction art and a unique synthesis of architecture and nature, historical wines of the 19th century, a stunning view of the Caucasus Mountains and the Alazani Valley.

Visit to the Shumi Winery. The Shumi Company has created its own museum of vines and wine - Vazioni. The museum contains ancient winemaking equipment found during archaeological excavations.
