Preserved by its long-lasting geographical isolation, the mountain landscape of the Upper Svaneti region is an exceptional example of mountain scenery with medieval villages and tower houses. The property occupies the upper reaches of the lnguri River Basin between the Caucasus and Svaneti ranges. It consists of several small villages forming a community that are dominated by the towers and situated on the mountain slopes, with a natural environment of gorges and alpine valleys and a backdrop of snow-covered mountains.
Day 1. Arrival
Arrival at the Tbilisi International Airport. Transfer to the hotel. Time at leisure. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 2. Tbilisi – Mestia
Breakfast. drive to Mestia. On the way to Mestia, we can enjoy the fantastic views of four waterfalls and three mountain peaks of the Caucasus – Ushba, Mazera, Shkhelda. Excursion to the city Mestia. It is included into the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The ‘capital’ of Upper Svaneti, Mestia is a conglomeration of at least 10 hamlets, dotted with picturesque Svan towers. The oldest of the hamlets, with most of the towers, are above the river on the northern side of town: Lekhtagi in the northwest, and Lanchvali and Lagami to the northeast. Visit the historic-ethnographical museum, medieval church and the district of fortifications. Hotel accommodation in Mestia. Dinner. Free time.
Day 3. Mestia – Chalaadi – Khatsvali – Mestia
Breakfast. As the first stop will be Chalaati glacier you will need to dress warmly. A wild rocky road runs through the forest, along a beautiful mountain river gorge. It begins with a stream that flows from the ice and almost immediately turns into a raging torrent. Glacial water has a tart taste. Chalaati array itself is one of the largest in the Caucasus. It is situated under rocks of the impregnable two-peak beauty – Ushba- a mountain, which has been the cause of awe admiration for generations of climbers. Even more fascinating panorama opens from the rope-way.
Khatsvali is the youngest and richest in snow ski resort of Georgia! The length of the ropeway is 1400 meters that you pass in 10 minutes while admiring views that gradually open before your eyes. Khatsvali will award you with not only a new angle of Ushba, but also a great view of the other famous mountain – Tetnuldi. According to a local legend Ushba and Tetnuldi were lovers, a boy and a girl, whom an evil fate did not allow to marry. So they were frozen with grief turning into two mountains separated by a deep gorge. Return To Mestia. Dinner. Free time.
Day 4. Mestia – Jabeshi – Adishi
Breakfast. Jeep-tour to Adishi (2040 m.). Hiking through the village Jabeshi – highland of the river Enguri. The location determines its name (translated from Svan – “upper village “; Jabe – the “top “). In Jabeshi there are mineral springs, the main attraction of Svaneti – the towers, the mountain landscapes of stunning beauty, among them: gorge Mulkheri, snowy Summit of Tetnuldi (4858 m.), south slope of Banguriani, summit Komsomol, mountain Ushba and Tviberi range. Arrval in Adishi Village. Within the vicinity of the village Adishi, you can find numerous monuments of medieval Georgian art: four churches featuring beautiful frescoes, traditional houses, unique towers, and samples of engraved artwork. Day 5. Adishi – Iprari – Ushguli
Breakfast. Hiking to the village Iprari (1890 m.). Leave the village by a path heading by the river to the east, to the foot of Adishi glacier. After one hour the path ends in a river – you will have to ford it. The best time to do it is in thehtyen morning when the water level is lower. Behind the river, the path appears again and starts sharply ascending. After 2 hours of climbing you should make it to the Chkhunderi pass (2655m) – it offers great views of surrounding mountains and the Adishi glacier. Look for a path that gradually climbs down from the ridge, starting to the right.
After the descent turn right, the trail to Iprali which follows the Khaldechala river is mostly downhill and quite obvious. On the way, you will see a number of deserted buildings and settlements. From the village of Iprari jeep route to the village Ushguli – Svan village at an altitude of 2200m above sea level, the highest permanent settlement in Europe. The village is among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Accommodation in a Guest house of Ushguli. Dinner. Free time.
Day 6. Ushguli – Shkhara – Mestia
Breakfast. Ushguli is one of the most beautiful places in Svaneti. Ushguli is reknown for its stone tower houses people lived, and also used as guard towers. The two most well-known towers are probably those where it is claimed that Georgia’s grand queen Tamar stayed at various periods towards the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century. Visit the church Lamaria (2300 m. above the sea level), the museum representing the icons of Ushguli. In the very upper part of Ushguli, there is a former monastery which shows the way further on towards Mount Shkhara. . North of Ushguli, the mighty Mount Shkhara rises to 5 068 metres. That makes Shkhara the highest mountain in Georgia Return to Mestia. Hotel accommodation. Dinner. Free Time.
Day 7. Mestia – Tbilisi
Breakfast. Drive to Tbilisi. On the way visit Kutaisi. Excursion in the ancient city Kutaisi, that is more than 3 thousand years old. Visit Gelati (XII c.) monastery and academy, established by the great Georgian king – David IV the Builder. Gelati is included into the list of World Heritage sites of UNESCO.
Arrival in Tbilisi. Hotel accommodation. Dinner. Free time.
Day 8. Departure.
Breakfast at the hotel. Purchase of souvenirs. Transfer to the airport.
