GEORGIAN CHURCH CHANTS
Georgian church singing
The origins of Georgian church singing go back to ancient times, when the ancestors of Georgians, the Chaldeans, were still pagans. According to historians, Georgian church singing has a history of 5,000 years old and was sung in religious places at that time.
Christianity transformed this song, giving it a different character. Georgian folk songs and church chants are very similar to each other and it is often difficult to understand, the character and essence of these songs. Georgian chants are mostly composed of three voices, and four-voice examples are rare. Its polyphony is based on national musical thinking.
Today, according to the decision of the Holy Synod of the Georgian Church, worship in Georgian churches is conducted only according to the ancient traditional Georgian church hymns.
