Khuluti Fortress (Georgian: ხულუტის ციხე) – Referred to in many documents as impregnable The castle’s plan follows the rocky terrain, so there are no straight lines. Instead of creating rectangular shapes, the castle’s builders focused on maximizing the usable space. The mighty citadel, built on the bank of the Khrami River (Georgian: ხრამი) in the 17th century, blocked the passage through the gorge. The castle makes a grandiose impression not so much from the outside as from the inside. Its ruins still impress with their medieval severity – thick walls, narrow windows, stuffy closets. All this is again and again the result of Georgia’s turbulent life in the era of feudalism.
The Khuluti Fortress is actually a residence, but according to the era, every building (even a church and a mill) had to be defensive, and especially a building like Khuluti. It consists of five towers of different heights, built into the fortress wall. The tower on the northwest side is very similar to a palace. The partition for the towers is a wall, in the middle of which there are steps. The top two floors of each tower are military, the other floors are residential. An underground tunnel leads to the river. There is also a one-story building through which you can get to two different towers, a tunnel, toilets and many other places. Approximately in the middle between this building and the tower there is a huge reservoir, and above it a roof and embrasures. In the middle of the complex there is a small courtyard. The rooms were heated with fireplaces.
