Nikortsminda Cathedral (Region of Racha – Lechkhumi)
Nikortsminda Cathedral (Georgian: ნიკორწმინდის ტაძარი) – An indisputably outstanding monument of Georgian architecture. The magnificence of Nikortsminda is especially evident in the carvings and ornaments. The abundance, diversity, sophistication and very high quality of the ornaments leave an indelible impression on the viewer. According to the donor’s inscription on the doors of the western entrance, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas was built by the first king of united Georgia, Bagrat III, in 1010-1014. During its existence, the monument has not undergone any major changes and has been preserved almost in its original form. The interior of the temple – exquisitely polished stone, a series of uniform, continuous arches, an internal facade decorated with luxurious carvings – is considered the best example of Georgian monumental sculpture.
The cathedral has a rectangular shape with short projections and five apses. The high neck of the 12-window, arched dome, carved arches surrounding the windows of the temple are striking. The walls are faced with well-processed stone. The painting decorating the interior walls of the cathedral has been preserved in excellent condition. The frescoes, dating from the 16th-17th centuries, are original and varied in plot. Various artistic styles are intertwined here in an original way, which speaks of the freedom of choice of motif and manner of execution. Portraits with inscriptions, fantastic and real animals, figures of saints and scenes from church life are depicted with equal skill. The spiritual value of Nikortsminda is especially great; for more than ten centuries, prayers and services have been held in this holy monastery for the glory of God, peace and prosperity of the Motherland.
