Okros Tsikhe Fortress (Region of Samtskhe-Javakheti)
Okros Tsikhe Fortress (Georgian: ოქროს ციხე ) (Golden Fortress) – The medieval fortress is located in the historical valley of the Kvabliani River, on an inaccessible rocky mountain. Due to its dominant position in the Kvabliani Valley, the fortress played a significant role in the defense of Samtskhe-Javakheti from the invasion of the Ottoman army. Having fortified themselves in the castle, the defenders controlled a very large territory, had good control over the roads and, due to the location and strength of the castle, could withstand a siege for a long time. It is one of the largest medieval fortifications in Georgia. Its thick walls are built of massive roughly dressed stone blocks up to 10 meters high.
The citadel rises above the rocky ridge of the mountain, and its fortress walls with towers descend steeply along both the southern and northern slopes. The structure has a complex configuration in plan and has several levels with an uneven rocky surface. The largest part of the castle is in the southern wing, where there are several (almost parallel) rows of walls. In addition to small wall supports, there are several larger towers inside the castle. One of them stands on the highest cliff and offers a view of the entire castle. The level changes at each stage. In 2007, the Okros-Tsikhe fortress was included in the list of immovable cultural monuments of national importance of Georgia.
