Pirukoumari Cave Monastery (David Gareji)
Pirokoumari Monastery (Georgian: გარეჯის პირუკუღმარის მონასტერი) — One of the cave monastery complexes of David Gareja, was founded in the 6th century. The complex includes two groups of caves carved into the rocks. One group is located in a ravine, the so-called — Baidi, the second, in a place called — Gaili, where fragments of small cauldrons have been preserved since ancient times. In the second group of caves, the church was not found. The first group includes a church located at an inaccessible height, and about 15 two-story cauldrons.
The church is of the hall type, with a tunnel connected to the burial vault of the monks, located in the south-eastern part of the complex. Currently, the complex is in a rather deplorable state. Getting into the caves is quite risky due to the constant and slow collapse of the rock. Also, it is necessary to take into account the difficult local terrain and the fact that the Pirukugamari complex is located quite far from the road. Traveling around the monastery, there is a high probability of encountering unwanted and dangerous creatures. Therefore, visiting the above-mentioned places is not recommended for groups traveling for tourist purposes.
