Timotesubani Monastery (Region of Samtskhe – Javakheti)
Timotesubani Monastery (Kimotesubani) (Georgian: ტიმოთესუბნის (კიმოთესუბნის) სამონასტრო კომპლექსი) – The monument of Georgian medieval architecture is located in the center of the historical region of Georgia – Tori (Georgian: თორი). According to the narrative, the name “Timotesubani” should be associated with the name of one of the monks of the monastery. The monastery buildings are built on terraces carved into the wooded hillside. The complex includes: the main temple of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Church of St. Barbara, a refectory, a brick vaulted building that serves as an entrance, a fence, a crypt, and the remains of various buildings. The single-nave basilica of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara is located on the northern terrace, northeast of the temple, and the remains of a burial vault.
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most important monuments of Georgian cultural heritage. It is built of light pink, so-called “Georgian” brick and is a central-domed structure. The painting of the temple is one of the most complex for its era. Due to its unique painting, it is included in the fund for the preservation of world culture and is one of the magnificent monuments of the era of Queen Tamara. It is worth noting the fresco with a hand-made icon of the Savior, a unique composition of the Day of Judgment, the area of 20 square meters, the Fresco of the Virgin Mary of the altar arch. The handwriting of different masters is clearly distinguishable. Within the framework of stylistic unity, they differ from each other in a sharp, completely unique character.
