Presentation of the guided tour theme
The first European “tourists” – the Argonauts, came to Georgia (Colchis) to search for the legendary Golden Fleece a thousand years BC. According to ancient Greek myths, golden sheep wool was obtained during gold mining in the mountain streams of Georgia. The Colchis Kingdom existed on the territory of modern Georgia in the 13th – 1st centuries BC.
The interest of ancient historical sources in Georgia shows that even before our era, the Georgian people were under the attention of the civilized world. Among the written sources related to Georgia, the legend of the Argonauts’ campaign against the Colchis Kingdom stands out.
In this famous story, no matter how many fantastic elements it contains, one thing is clear: by the middle of the second millennium BC, the Greeks were well aware of the existence on the eastern coast of the Black Sea of a powerful, prosperous and culturally developed Colchis kingdom.
In the tour program we have compiled, we have tried to repeat the route as much as possible and select all possible places that coincide with the path taken by the Argonauts in Western Georgia, starting from the Rioni River delta and ending with the territory of the present-day city of Kutaisi. The tour program also includes the most famous attractions located near the points of the thematic direction.
