Description of the excursion

The question of the exact date of the founding of Mtskheta remains the subject of historical and archaeological research. According to numerous sources and artifacts, the first settlements in this area arose in the Bronze Age. However, historical evidence is scant in detail due to the lack of written artifacts from this period. Nevertheless, archaeological finds demonstrate the presence of settlements in this area long before the emergence of modern Mtskheta.

The historical events and factors underlying the foundation of the capital of the ancient Iberian Kingdom, Mtskheta, are associated with its strategic location at the crossroads of trade routes and important political events. Due to its location, Mtskheta played a key role in the history of Georgia as a center of culture, religion and political power. One of the events in the history of Mtskheta was the adoption of Christianity in Georgia in the 4th century.

Tour Plan

Itinerary: Tbilisi - Mtskheta - Shio-Mgvime - Kanda - Dzalisi - Tbilisi

Visit to Jvari Monastery- Georgian Monastery, one of the masterpieces of Georgian architecture, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is an important historical and religious center in Georgia. Jvari (literally "cross") is located on the top of a mountain at the confluence of the Kura and Aragvi rivers - where the first Christian cross was erected by Saint Nino. The temple symbolizes not only the Christian faith, but also represents an architectural symbol of the heavenly Jerusalem on earth. The observation deck of the monastery offers a stunning view of the city of Mtskheta.

Visit to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral- An ancient shrine and spiritual center of Georgia, stands majestically on the banks of the Kura River, as a guardian of ancient traditions and faith. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it holds the most important Orthodox relics: the chiton of the Lord, the font of King Mirian, a particle of the relics of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called, the robe of the prophet Elijah, and the relics of the holy Georgian kings. In addition to its religious significance, Svetitskhoveli amazes with its architectural splendor. The magnificent combination of ancient Christian motifs with the Georgian national style creates an amazing architectural work of art.

Visit to Samtavro Monastery - The monastery, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is an important and remarkable monument from a historical and cultural point of view. From this holy place, Saint Nino preached the righteousness of Christ to the Georgian people. Here the Georgian Christian faith and self-awareness were born. For many years, Samtavro was the center of the Christian religion, it was visited by kings and rulers of Georgia, the most famous icons were kept here. Samtavro keeps Christian shrines - the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, the relics of the elder Gabriel Urgebadze.

Visit to the Church of St. Stephen the Martyr (Antioch Church) - The church, built in the 4th century by the Greek master Averlios Akolios, on the holy site of the baptism of the Georgians, at the confluence of the Kura and Aragvi rivers, is one of the oldest in Mtskheta. The church is one of the oldest monuments of Christian architecture in Georgia. It is quite possible that the representative of the Antiochian Patriarchate, the Exarch of the Antiochian Church, was located here, and therefore the temple was popularly called "Antiochian".

Visit to Shio-Mgvime Monastery - An outstanding architectural monument of the early feudal period of Georgia, surrounded by majestic mountains. The monastery complex, lost in a beautiful rocky massif covered with hundreds of caves, enchants the visitor at first sight. The monastery played a significant role in the preservation and dissemination of Georgian culture, and its walls still contain ancient manuscripts and art. For believers and pilgrims, the Shio-Mgvime Monastery has great spiritual significance.

Visit to Kanda Monastery- The Monastery of the 13 Assyrian Fathers in the village of Kanda has long been unable to accommodate all the parishioners who come here every Sunday for prayer, conducted by the church mentor, Schema-Archimandrite Seraphim Bit-Haribi in Aramaic. Schema Archimandrite Seraphim is the spiritual father of the Orthodox Assyrian Diaspora in Georgia, he performs with sonorous chants in Aramaic. Few people know and use this language now. However, it was this language that became the beginning of the Orthodox Church of Jesus Christ.

Visit to the ancient city of Dzalisi - In its historical and stylistic significance, Dzalisi could be compared to Pompeii or Herculaneum. Around the 3rd century BC, a city was located on this site, which played an important role in the life of the Iberian Kingdom. Among the buildings, the monumental palaces stand out. One of them, a multi-hall architectural complex, has an area of about 2,500 square meters. This is the largest among the ancient palace-type buildings found on the territory of Georgia. The highly artistic mosaics found on the territory of the Dzalisi settlement are a clear example of the high standard of urban life in the Kingdom of Iberia.
