Martvili Canyon (Samegrelo Region)
Martvili Canyon (Georgian: მარტვილის კანიონი ) – Martvili Canyon or, as it is also called, Gochkadili Canyon (Georgian: გოჩკადილი ) is one of the most amazing places not only in the Samegrelo Region, but in all of Georgia. It is one of the ten Georgian natural monuments, and is sometimes called the Georgian “Jurassic Park”. The white limestone cliffs, through which the sometimes turbulent and sometimes quite leisurely Abasha River (Georgian: აბაშა) has carved its way, appeared in the Mesozoic era. They formed the modern Martvili Canyon, rising above the water in places by 30-40 meters. Archaeological excavations were once carried out here, and scientists discovered fossilized remains of dinosaurs at the bottom of the canyon and on its steep “banks”. The age of these finds is more than 75 million years.
The analysis revealed that millions of years ago, there was a very diverse fauna near the village of Gochkadili – herbivores and predators roamed here. And traces of ancient marine reptiles – mesosaurs – were found on the river bottom. But the Martvili Canyon is interesting not only for its prehistoric past. Flora typical of the Colchis forest is developed on the surrounding limestone cliffs, with its unique representatives. The canyon consists of two parts – upper and lower, which are separated by a shallow. People go boating along the upper canyon, and just walk and swim in the lower one. The leisurely waters of the Abasha, winding between majestic cliffs, bright greenery and white stones, rainbow waterfalls, the feeling of primeval wildness of these places attract many lovers of beauty.
