Mayakovsky Museum (Region of Imereti)
House – Museum of Vladimir Mayakovsky (Georgian: მაიაკოვსკის სახლ-მუზეუმი) – The House-Museum of the famous Russian poet and founder of Futurism, Vladimir Mayakovsky is located in a two-storey estate in the village of Baghdati (Georgian: ბაღდათი). The writer was born in 1893 in the Kutaisi province of Georgia, where the future playwright spent the first years of his life. The father of the future poet served as a third-class forester in Baghdati forestry. In 1906, after the death of his father, due to financial problems, Vladimir Mayakovsky moved to Russia together with his mother and sisters. The museum was founded by personal order of Stalin, then Baghdati was renamed Mayakovsky and was so called for the next 50 years. The memorial house-museum founded consists of a dwelling house, a small garden and an exhibition hall, which contains more than five thousand exhibits about the work of the publicist.
Visitors should pay special attention to the interior of the estate, as Mayakovsky came from an impoverished noble family. Mayakovsky’s sisters and mother donated items and personal belongings from the time when they lived here, and the furniture they sold when they left was found and bought from the townspeople. His father’s study with a rich collection of literary works by Leo Tolstoy, Alexander Pushkin and Maxim Gorky has been preserved in the estate. The museum collection also contains documentary materials, personal notes and letters, photographs of the writer’s family. On the basis of the museum there is a literary salon, where the local creative community interested in Mayakovsky’s works unites.
