Megaliths of Saro (Region of  Samtskhe-Javakheti)
Cyclopean fortress in the village of Saro (Georgian: საროს ციკლოპური ციხე) – The complex of cyclopean buildings in the village of Saro is a multi-layered monument, the oldest layer of which dates back to the Iron Age. In terms of its cultural, architectural and historical value, the complex is one of the outstanding and important examples of Georgia. The thousand-year-old castle makes a huge impression with its scale and design. Traces of numerous cyclopean megalithic structures on its territory indicate that once, in the immemorial past, this place played a very significant role in the cultural and political life of the region. Megaliths of Saro are relevant primarily because of the scale of what was created here. The total area where traces of cyclopean structures are visible covers several thousand square meters.
The cyclopean fortress is located on a rocky mountain plateau. It includes pre-Christian and medieval buildings and is divided into three parts: “Lower Fortress” is located on the western edge of today’s village. “Upper Fortress” – covers the territory in the immediate vicinity of the Temple of the Archangels. “New Fortress” is located northwest of the “Upper Fortress”. Like most large megalithic structures, the complex To the south of the cyclopean fortress of Saro, the walls and remains of old settlements of the pre-Christian era have been preserved. What period the fortress flourished in and when its decline began is no longer possible to determine with certainty, although the results of archaeological excavations indicate that intensive life continued here until the middle of the feudal era.
