Bridge of Peace (Tbilisi)
Bridge of Peace (Georgian: მშვიდობის ხიდი) – A glass bridge suspended in a transparent blue arch over the river, it has become a symbol of the journey of Tbilisi from the past to the future. One of the city’s landmarks, the pedestrian bridge connects the quarters of Old Tbilisi located on the left bank of the river with the recently developed Rike Park (Georgian: რიყის პარკი ), spread out on the right bank of the Kura River (Georgian: მტკვარი ). The goal of the bridge’s architecture was to create a structure that would not only be effective, but would also completely change the intonation of this particular place. The basic idea of the bridge, the idea of connection, is brought to the forefront, and the result is an original building, sinusoidal in shape, as if covered by a wind-blown roof, a dialogue between past and present.
The roof, which combines architecture and construction, is a single membrane created by a frame of iron pipes, covering a pedestrian walkway in the form of an awning with glass panels. European avant-garde artists were involved in the development of the project: the Italian architect F. Martin and the French designer M. de Lucchi. The high-tech bridge amazes with its magnificent illumination built into the parapets of the bridge at night: every hour 30,000 bulbs “write” in Morse code the names of the chemical elements that make up the human body. From an architectural point of view, the bridge is an impressive example of modern architecture, which has given the old district of Tbilisi a special charm. It has become a favorite place for Tbilisi residents and tourists and is perceived as one of the symbols of the renewed Tbilisi.
