Memorial Complex – “Chronicle of Georgia”
Memorial Complex – “Chronicle of Georgia” or Memorial – “History of Georgia” (Georgian: საქართველოს ისტორიის მემორიალი) – The memorial is a perfect symbol of the description and unification of times. The bronze columns erected on the mountain form a whole structure and at the same time pages of history. The memorial shows how great the history of Georgia is. What a long history of statehood this small piece of land has. The question naturally arises – What force saved this country from many powerful enemies, most of which no longer exist today, and the answer to this question is this Memorial of Georgian Identity. A long wide staircase leads to the ensemble, at the end of which 16 columns carved from bronze and copper stand. Two columns on the sides of the staircase symbolize the antiquity of Georgia as a state and its active participation in the life of the ancient world.
When viewed from above, the columns are arranged in the form of a cross. The storyline of the columns is divided into three parts: The first and main part begins with biblical fragments. The depiction of biblical scenes in the main part testifies to the close connection between Georgian history and religious beliefs, to the fact that the Georgian nation existed and exists on a Christian basis. The second part depicts specific personalities – kings, writers, military leaders and clergymen. All of them were united by a common goal – the prosperity of Georgia. The third part, with the help of beautiful high reliefs, presents outstanding moments in the history of Georgia. The depicted events emphasize the great history of Georgia, which barely fits on these 35-meter high columns. In the center of the complex is a symbolic tomb of kings and figures buried outside Georgia. Apart from the uniqueness of the monument, this place has a beautiful view that fills the viewer with no less emotions.
