Duration: 8 -10 hours
Tour programme : Tbilisi – Asureti (Elisabethtal) – Bolnisi (Katharinenfeld ) – Tbilisi
An unusual journey through time lasts several hours and covers historically, culturally and architecturally important places of the of German settlements in Georgia. This is a unique opportunity to plunge into the glorious past of the German colony, to feel the atmosphere of 200 years ago.
The history of Elisabethtal (Asureti) began in 1818. German evangelists believed that the apocalypse was near and only those who would be near Mount Ararat would be saved. Those who were unable to reach the mountain during the resettlement remained in Georgia.
The local German cultural heritage is mainly composed of dwelling houses. Most houses have a wine cellar. Food (wheat, corn, sunflower seeds, ham, fruits) were stored in the attic. The houses have a balcony in front and at the side, often with a decorated handrail.
In addition to residential buildings, the village has preserved: Evangelical Lutheran Church, Public House, Winery designed by German engineers, Potato warehouse, Two-story village bathhouse, German cemetery with unique tombstones for Georgia.
Among the German villages of Georgia, Katharinenfeld (Bolnisi) was the largest urban-type settlement, and it covers an important area of the center of the current city of Bolnisi. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the detailed history and functional purpose of two dozen objects.
In the German district of Bolnisi, in addition to the church, school, mill, and firehouse, the cobbled streets, some industrial buildings and residential houses from different periods have survived to this day, which seems to have a strong influence on Georgian architecture.
It is a synthesis of Swabian-Georgian architecture, where traditional Georgian wooden balconies coexist with fachwerk style typical of German houses, with their high-attic roofs and deep basements.
The basements of the German houses in Bolnisi still have functioning cellars, where barrels of different sizes and equipment needed for winemaking are kept to this day. Many families still preserve German furniture, books, musical instruments, and household items.
In 1941, almost all Germans were sent to Siberia and Kazakhstan. By this time, there were about 40,000 descendants of German settlers in Georgia, living in Tbilisi and in different regions of the country.
In 2016, due to their architectural and historical significance, some buildings in Bolnisi (Katharinenfeld) and Asureti (Elisabethtal) were given the status of cultural heritage monuments.
