Udzo Monastery
The medieval monastery of Udzo (Georg. უძოს მონასტერი), founded in the XIII century, is one of the most impressive and spiritually significant places in the country. The monastery is located in a picturesque corner of mountainous Georgia, surrounded by dense forests and has a mystical aura due to its remoteness and quiet tranquility. Rising above the rest of the world, 1416 m above sea level, the monastery is clearly visible from all sides.
The monastery not only impresses with its beauty, but also has deep spiritual significance for many people who want a child. Legend says that the Church of St. George was built by a childless man who tirelessly prayed to the saint for a son. The sufferer’s wish was fulfilled. This is where both the name of the mountain and the church came from – “Udzo” – translated from Georgian as “childless”.
The monastery is an example of classical Georgian architecture with elements characteristic of its time. Here you can feel the spirit of ancient times and see unique architectural details that speak of a rich history. The majestic church interior, decorated with frescoes and icons, immerses visitors in a spiritual atmosphere and helps them feel connected to higher powers.
